Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has joined  fellow women in the county admitted  in local hospitals  to celebrate this year’s  International Women’s Day .

Through her CECM for Gender  and Youth  Millicent Ngari the   governor sent goodies to mothers admitted in various area health facilities for themselves and their young ones .

Ngari told mothers and expectant ones at  the Kerugoya referral hospital that the governor could not find anything else better to celebrate the day than to provide them with the goodies they so much desired .

The women were provided with sanitary towels, bar soaps  and   dippers  for their newly born ones .

The governor at the same  time decried  the increasing incidents of Gender Based Violence and called  for concerted  efforts by all the  stake  holders to bring to an end this outdated social vice.

She also called for total eradication  of FGM within the society terming the practice as criminal and medieval  and overtaken by modernity .

Ngari while responding to questions from the media said  she was  still having a comprehensive data on FGM being compiled  to  be able to ascertain the magnitude of the practice in the county.

FGM though outlawed and criminalised by the government is still practiced with a lot of secrecy and even in hospitals .

Ngari said FGM being one of the  forms of GBV should be fought from all corners until it was eradicated from the society and the perpetrators  brought to book.

“At  the moment our governor has  ensured there are GBV desks at  all the public health facilities manned  by champions  of anti GBV where  those violated  should report the incidents  and also receive free counseling services, ”she said.

The mothers said they were appreciative to the good gesture from Waiguru  especiary during these days of  economic hardships where affordability of basic items like what they had received was a toll order.

They said they had never seen such a gesture in their lifetime like the one Waiguru showed them more so when she was able to put a smile on their faces during the  celebrations .
