Tension is high in Kirinyaga County following the alleged arbitrary arrests of some UDA leaders and supporters ahead of Martha Karua’s home coming yesterday.
Kirinyaga County Assembly Majority Leaders Kamau Murango was the first to be arrested on Monday night while on a business trip in Mombasa only to be arraigned in court yesterday.
He was accused of allegedly organising and planning to disrupt the home coming of the DP nominee while on her home coming .
Also arrested on the same night was Bosco Gichangi at his house in Kimuri Estate , Kerugoya town and accused with the same office .
Gichangi who is the UDAs Coordinator for Kirinyaga Central Constituency spent a whole night at the Kerugoya police station only to be realised after 4 pm yesterday without any charge .
He was however ordered to report to the same station this morning while four police vehicles and 15 policemen had been used to arrest him.
Some 10 party supporters were also arrested but got released later last night without any charges being preferred against them.
The Thiba Ward UDA candidate whose house was stormed at night and accused of having similar motives like Murango ang Gichangi .He was however not picked up after the police officers failed to obtain any evidence ,linking him to the suspected offence.
Following the development Governor Anne Waiguru who is defending her seat on a UDA ticket reacted angrily and asserted that no amount of intimidations would deter her and her supporters to abandon the course.
Through her twitter handle Waiguru termed the arrests as arbitrary and wondered why the state agents should be used to suppress those with divergent political persuasion
Waiguru told those behing the arrests to read the signs on the time and understand that the UDA was in the hearts of Kirinyaga people and no one could change this scenario .
Local UDA leadership led by Maina Kihia accused state agents of being used to force the locals into supporting the Raila Odinga led Azimio .
“Trying to force the Azimio down the throats of Kirinyaga people is tantamount to selling pork meat in the Muslim dominated Middle East , “Kihia said .
Kihia and his colleagues who addressed a hastily convened press conference at the Bekam hotel last evening vowed to soldier on until William Ruto became the Fifth President come August 9 general elections .
Although Karua managed to snake through various towns and markets in the county , there were shouts and chants of UDA wherever she shouted Azimio.
With the kind of resistance against Azimio in the county only time will tell which direction the local politics will now assume .
