Emotions high as Chief is laid to rest

The casket containing the body of a former Kiamugumo Sub-Location, the late Denis Magu Njeru who was brutally murdered inside his house after a bitter domestic quarel lies in state during  his funeral ceremony at the local primary school grounds yesterday 

Emotions ran high at the burial ceremony of an Assistant Chief who was stabbed to death  at Kiamugumo  primary school grounds , Kirinyaga East  Sub- County .

Those who were close to the area Assistant Chief Denis Magu Njeru shed tears as they eulogized a man who was dear to them and down to earth even upon being appointed to the prestigious Provincial Administration.

His age-mates tearfully narrated before the mourners how they schooled together at primary and secondary school and even shared many good times together as youths.

They described him as a man of all seasons who taught Sunday school, initiated many development projects for the church and who led by example by being a model small scale farmer despite his recent acquired  societal status.

He was appointed to the position of an Assistant Chief just slightly over six months  ago and had started off on a high note becoming the darling  of the area residents .

Magu met his tragic death on the eve of Dec 15 after he was confronted by s wife of 14 years with a knife after a  bitter domestic  disagreement.

He was stabbed on the chest and fell down bleeding profusely only for the wife to get out screaming for help during the 10 pm incident.

Njeru’s mother  Wanjiru was the first to respond only to find the lifeless body of his first born lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen .

County political leaders present at the   ceremony urged couples to respect, tolerate and value each other.

Led by the County Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici, the leaders also said it was important for couples to respect the privacy of each other.

Ngirici said though marriages were not a walk in the park nor a bed of roses , an aggrieved partner should just walk away in the event the other one became  violent .

“If you sense your marriage is  has hit  rock  bottom and beyond reprieve don’t wait to be violated but juts walk out and leave the aggressive partner instead of waiting to be  killed like we have witnessed in Gichugu  during the last one month, “ she tols the mourners.

And the  area parliamentary aspirant Dr Njagi Makanga  who   was present  at the funeral vowed to ensure  stringent and deterrent laws were in place to contain  the underworld of drugs .

He said most of the murders and related   domestic violence were caused by the influence of drugs  as attested  by the multiple murders of five family  members at Kathata village on  the night of November 28 .

The family head was said to have wiped out the  entire family from the wife to his four children with  by hacking them with an axe at about 2 am on the material date .

Yesterday Njagi said had there been stringent laws in place to ruthlessly deal with suppliers , retailers and consumers of drugs such a bizarre incidents would not have occurred after it emerged the perpetrator was  a drug addict .

The aspirant said he will also ensure counselors were available at the grass root level to be able to monitor and  counter any emerging unusual behavior   by  couples or  the youth.

“Other than  the legislation of the stringent laws once  I get to the National Assembly next year , I will also be keenly  watching  a sample of families likely to be involved in drug taking through the advice of the grass root counselors I will have hired ,’ he said.

Njagi on the other hand said he will embark on cleansing of the negative image Gichugu had acquired to the recent nasty incidents among them the  raping of a 96 year old granny by a 30 old youth at Kamwana area.

Added  Njagi “ by holding a  massive demonstration in the area to condemn and denounce such   barbaric  acts of this mature , we will have hammered the point home and  I believe  this will create awareness  to our people  to shun such ugly and unthinkable criminal acts,”.

The late  Njeru was the son of a nominated area MCA Rose Wanjiru ( warubeni ), while her colleagues  Albina Nyaga and Caroline Murithi (wakaiimbi), attended the ceremony.
